"Smiles for a Lifetime" DVD
What
inspired The Dental Diva to create the "Smiles for a lifetime"
DVD?
Dr. Jamie Johnson had
a patient named Julianna who had a deep-seeded fear of dentists
as a result of numerous oral surgeries on her jaw as an infant.
Dr. Jamie came up with the idea to have her own son model to
Julianna for what was going to happen at the dentist office,
so that she wouldn't’t be scared. This sparked her passion to
help other parents and children who had fear of the dentist
and “Smiles
for a Lifetime” was born.

General Dental Questions
How often should my child brush his/her teeth?
The American Dental Association
recommends children brush their teeth at least twice per day,
every single day.
How often should my child floss his/her teeth?
The American Dental Association
recommends children floss their teeth at least once per day,
every single day.
Is flossing really necessary?
Only if you want to keep your teeth free from disease!
How do you floss?
The "Smiles
for a Lifetime" DVD demonstrates correct flossing technique
for children to floss their own teeth and for parents to floss
their children’s teeth as well.
I don’t floss my teeth, so how am I supposed to help my kids floss their teeth?
"Smiles
for a Lifetime" will give you all of the tools you
need to floss your children’s teeth or for them to floss their
own teeth, if they are old enough. YOU need to set the example.
Can
my child just be “knocked out” for his/her dental work?
When children require extensive dental work or have extreme behavioral management difficulties, general anesthesia under the care of an experienced pediatric dentist is recommended.
What
happens if my child won’t wear his/her retainer?
Talk to your child’s orthodontist or dentist about ways to motivate your child.
How can I motivate my children to take better care of their teeth?
Be a good role model
for your children by brushing and flossing your OWN teeth every
single day. Watch the "Smiles
for a Lifetime" DVD so that your child can see what
other children with healthy teeth do to care for them every
day.
Is flossing really important?
Flossing is actually MORE important in preventing cavities between the teeth than brushing is!
What type of toothbrush do you recommend?
The Dental Diva, Dr. Jamie Johnson, recommends ONLY toothbrushes with SOFT bristles and compact heads for children. Sonic and electric toothbrushes are also effective, but should have soft bristles and compact heads also.
What type of floss do you recommend?
Any type of dental floss will work, just find the right “type” for your child’s teeth. If they have space between their teeth, consider a “woven” floss, or if the spaces are extremely tight, try a waxed floss or even unwaxed floss. Experiment with different types to see what works best.
Doesn't’t
mouthwash help prevent cavities?
In a nutshell, NO. There have been recent claims by some companies that mouthwash is as effective as flossing, and this is not true! Brushing and flossing is the most effective way to prevent cavities.
Does
breast milk cause tooth decay?
Yes. Breast milk is a
fermentable carbohydrate, just like formula or cow’s milk, and
frequent and prolonged exposure to any fermentable carbohydrate
will cause cavities.
How much fluoride is the right amount for kids?
This depends on where you live, if your water supply is fluoridated or has naturally occurring fluoride. Check with your dentist or local water works. The American Dental Association recommends 0.1 part per million for ideal fluoride levels in developing teeth.
How long should I brush my teeth?
At least two minutes,
at least two times per day for children AND adults.
When should my child see an orthodontist?
Your dentist will recommend when it is ideal for your child to see an orthodontist. The American Dental Association and the American Academy or Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic evaluation for all children by their 7th birthday.
How much does it cost to see a dentist?
This varies by geographic region and what treatment your child needs. Prevention is the key to keeping the cost low. Check with YOUR dentist to find out how much it costs.
How much does a filling cost?
This varies by geographic region and what treatment your child needs. Prevention is the key to keeping the cost los. Check with YOUR dentist to find out how much it costs.
What if my child is afraid of shots?
First of all, talk to
your child’s dentist about this when your child is not around.
Dentists are expert “shot-givers” and really want to make this
easy for your child. In our office, the “shot” is often referred
to as a “mosquito bite” and we use a topical anesthetic to make
it as easy as possible. Often, children don’t even know they’ve
had a “shot” when they aren't’t freaked out about having one
before they arrive. Let your dentist talk to your child about
it FIRST!
How can I get my child to eat better?
First, be a good model
for your child. Second, buy and watch “Smiles
for a Lifetime” with your child and discuss what good nutrition
means and what your child’s favorite healthy foods are.
How can I keep my child from needing shots?
Practice all of the techniques provided in the DVD. Brush, floss, discuss sealants, orthodontics and nutrition with your dentist and child.
What if my child's dentist is recommending a stainless steel crown (a silver cap) and I don't want my child to have it?
Talk to your dentist about your concerns and see if there might be other treatment options. Stainless steel crowns (silver caps) tend to last until your child's baby teeth fall out (which makes it easier on your child if they don't need fillings replaced), but can also create social concerns (teasing, etc.) especially on the front teeth.
